Mr. Tom Mukai – Head Sensei

Sensei Tom Mukai earned his at Shodan the Steveston Judo Club in 1957. He spent the early 1960’s studying Judo at the Kodokan in Tokyo, before returning to Canada to teach at the Steveston Dojo. In 1964, he opened the Burnaby Judo Club with his brother Henry Mukai. Sensei Tom has been teaching Judo continuously for fifty years, making the Burnaby Judo Club one of the oldest sports clubs in the city. He has been an International Competitor, Coach and IJF Referee. Sensei Tom, is a Lifetime Member of Judo BC, and as a Hachidan, is the second highest ranking Black Belt in British Columbia.

Mr. Henry Mukai (Hank) – Retired

Sensei Henry Mukai earned his at Shodan at the Steveston Judo Club in 1958 at the age of 16.  He co-founded the Burnaby Judo Club along with his brother Sensei Tom. Sensei Henry was the first Canadian Nikkei Judoka to win first place in the Canadian Judo Championships and was an international competitor, coach and IJF referee.  A highlight of Sensei Henry’s international career was at the Pan American Judo Championship, San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1968. At this tournament, beat the USA middleweight champion, Luis Gonzalez.  Sensei Henry is now retired and still involved with the club.

Curtis Pentland – Head Instructor

Curtis earned his Shodan at the Burnaby Judo Club in 1985, where he has been teaching continuously for thirty years. As a former National Team member, he has studied and competed in Europe and Japan. He has also served as President of Judo BC, and as Vice President of Judo Canada. Curtis has been a Provincial Coach, and an NCCP Course Facilitator.

Radomir (Bob) Oresecanin – Head Instructor, Adult Rec. Class

National “A” Referee

Bob has studied Judo since the early sixties in Italy, Canada, United States and Japan.  He was awarded the rank of Shodan by NANKA in California in 1986 and assisted instructors at Los Angeles Tenri Dojo.  Bob has been teaching and coaching at Burnaby for 30 years and is the lead instructor for the Adult Recreation Class which he started in 1996.  He competed in Seniors and Masters in Canada and in USA, as well as Kata Nationals and Kata World Masters in Europe.   Bob is a Past President of the Burnaby Judo Club, and is a member of the Board of Directors and the Technical Committee.   Bob endeavours to teach Judo in its Japanese form, continuing the original ethics of Judo.  He is strongly passionate about the discipline / martial art / sport of Judo and strives to pass on his love of Judo to his students and contacts.

Mark Nariiwa- Instructor

Mark has been a member of the Burnaby Judo Club since he was 8. He earned his Shodan in 1995 and has been teaching since 2001. Mark was on the Executive board from 2007 until 2014, while serving as President from 2008 until 2013.

Sensei Yuki YokosawaYuki Yokosawa – Expert Technical Consultant

NCCP Level II Certified

Yuki is a former World and Olympic Silver Medalist, Asian Champion, and multiple World Team Championship Gold Medalist. Originally coached by her father, Yuki started Judo as an Elementary student in Gunma, Japan. Upon graduating from High School, she joined the prestigious Mitsui Sumitomo Women’s Judo Team where she is still a special coach. As a member of the Japanese National Team, Yuki won many medals at the highest levels of International Completion. She has also traveled as an assistant coach for the Japanese Women’s National Team. Yuki has been teaching at the Burnaby Judo Club since 2008.

Paul earned his Shodan at the Lethbridge Judo Club in 1987. He is a former member of the Alberta Provincial Team and an IJF Continental Referee. He serves on the Judo BC Technical Committee and is an Associate Member of the Judo BC Grading Board. Paul has been teaching at the Burnaby Judo Club for ten years.

Pat started Judo in 1996 at the Burnaby Judo Club in the Adult Recreation Class. She received her Shodan in 2003. Pat has been competing in Juno Kata competitions since 2009, medalling at Nationals several times. Most recently, she competed at the IJF World Kata Competition in Kyoto, Japan. Pat has been active on the Board of Directors since 2002 as Secretary, Treasurer or a Member at Large, and has been on the Technical Committee for 9 years. Pat assists the team of instructors in the Adult Recreation Class and enjoys the discipline and technical aspects of Judo.

Brian Hampson – Assistant Instructor, Adult Rec. Class

Brian earned his Shodan at the Burnaby Judo Club in 2003, and has been practicing Judo for over 20 years. Has been instructing the Adult Recreational Class for over 15 years.

We welcome Ron as the newest member of the Burnaby Judo Club Instructor group.  He started judo in 1956 in Lethbridge, Alberta.  From 1973 to 2010, he was Sensei at the University of Alberta Judo Club.  Over the years, he has coached and trained many aspiring Judoka including international level Kata competitors.   Ron is retired and having a wonderful life in Vancouver.
